Patagonia is a land of contrasts, the wild arid
steppes setting off the green watered valleys,
imposing mountains giving way to flat unending
pampas, howling gales alternating with soft spring
breezes, lakes and crystal clear rivers filled
with trout. Few people are indifferent to Patagonia
- either you love it or you hate it.
Patagonia has held the fascination of geologists,
biologists, archeologists, mountaineers, sailors,
naturalists, explorers and adventurers ever since
it was first explored. It remains very much as
W.H.Hudson, the explorer and writer, first describe
it, “solitary wilderness, resting far off
in its primitive and desolate peace, untouched
by man, remote from civilization”.
This incredible region offers every type of outdoor
activity imaginable. An extensive system of National
Parks has been established and much of the land
has been protected. The horseback riding in Patagonia’s
large estancia’s is a wonderful experience
and the scenery unlimited. It is a land of such
diversity and indescribable natural beauty that
it should be visited and experienced at least
once in one’s lifetime.
We will ride close to Junin de los Andes, a small
agricultural and cattle breeding town, also well
known for trout fishing. It is located in the
foothills of the Andes at an altitude of about
650 meters sea leve.
This solitary wilderness, as W.H.Hudson wrote
has been able to maintain it’s primitive
vegetation such as ñires, rauli, chacay
and maiten. In the higher lands you can find native
araucaria and lenga woods. Likewise there is also
a great variety of wildlife including red deer,
wild boar, red foxes, guanacos, hares, wild rabbits,
ostriches, armadillos, skunks, pumas. An unforgettable
sight is to see a condor soaring overhead, there
are several types of eagles and hawks, magellan
geese, owls, ducks, humming birds, bandurrias,
king fishers and many more.
